World Doula Week and What is a doula? This week is world doula week - it is a special event to show families how great doulas really are and to understand our work! So, I get this all the time - is a doula the same thing as a midwife? No! Midwives do medical things and catch babies - and I don't do that! So, what is a doula then? A birth doula helps hold the hand of a mother; she helps give her labor and breathing tips; she helps with the birth plan; she helps the couple during labor; she offers comfort support using the rebozo; and much more. She is continuous labor support! A postpartum doula helps the family once they are home with the baby by preparing food; by helping with laundry and light tasks; by helping the mother understand breastfeeding better; helping the mother know how to care for her baby; and most important to help the mother on her road to recovery with other tasks - such as belly binding to traditional teas! What about the dad? Will he be involved if I have a doula? Absolutely, yes! We work with fathers all the time - help him help you so to speak. A dad can be involved to the level he feels comfortable. If he wants to offer the comfort measures (like squeezing your hips, etc.) - then we are glad to let the dad offer more of the hands on help (he's probably got stronger arms!) Plus, we want dads to be comfortable in birth. We also recommend an app called "Helping Her" which is some extra guy tips for helping the mother during her birth time. Also, we can give "dad" that break if he needs it to take a nap during your labor! Dads and doulas usually make good teams with mama! What about postpartum doulas - how does dad get involved there? A dad will be encouraged to bond with the baby by holding the baby; helping with diapering; and things like that! A dad will be encouraged to help the mother in her breastfeeding (if she's doing that) or bottle feeding. The dad will be encouraged to help mama get the rest she needs! So, if you want to hire a doula - then please ask me or if you live somewhere else - I offer virtual doula services - so check out my birth doula page here or my postpartum doula page here. I offer free consults. I also offer holistic nutritional coaching for mothers and wellness coaching info here - I do a short 15 minute consult for free after that we can talk longer for $25 if you need more time to decide and determine what package would work for you.
